Extortion 17 and the Truth by Marty Skovlund, Jr. On the anniversary of the Extortion 17 tragedy, we remember the heroic men who were felled rushing into battle, as they had done hundreds of times before.
One would hope that we could remember them for the heroes they are, but instead the news and social media is tainted with rumors of conspiracy. This is absolutely ridiculous, and after many interviews with eyewitnesses to the event, I want to set the record straight. They flew into action after a few military aged males fled from the target building, in the hopes of capturing the still unidentified high value target. Tragically, none aboard the aircraft survived the impact of the rocket propelled grenade and subsequent crash.
There were many heroes that night, including the special operation strike force that primarily consisted of Rangers, who rushed to the scene of the crash with out regard for their own safety and began the gruesome task of recovering the bodies.
They were in the enemy laden province of Wardak, and fought their way to the target building on infil as well as on the target itself.
They had some Rangers who were wounded in action, but at the time the helicopter was shot down, they had already detained the enemy combatants with zip ties and had called up that the target was secure. Understandably so, this was a big target and the SEALs were probably more than excited to be the ones to catch him. This is absolutely not true.
Although I will not get into the structure of this unit or the manning, they have more than enough sailors assigned to the unit to be capable of conducting multiple missions around the country and world in a single night. This is not true. First of all, there is no black box on this type of aircraft, so there was no black box to be washed away. There was, however, a flood that carried many pieces of the aircraft away. As the Rangers were securing the crash site and collecting the bodies that were strewn about many on board Extortion 17 did not have their safety lines hooked up so when the bird went into a spin it flung many personnel all over the area surrounding the crash site the enemy fighters in the area devised a plan to blow a small dam in the hopes of segregating the Ranger element in order to attack them and hinder their ability to maneuver.
There is no question that the ROE has only become more and more strict in Afghanistan, and that this hinders our forces. However, it was not a primary cause of this tragedy. So, when you are among the last to launch on a mission in any given period of darkness, you have to take what you can get as all the SOAR birds are already spoken for by other strike forces. In this case, a Chinook helicopter from the conventional forces was what they had to use.
My last deployment in Afghanistan we had to ride conventional Chinooks every now and again, and one night we even crash landed. It sucks, but you know the risks when you board the aircraft. If only this were true, I would have had much more comfortable flights overseas. Contrary to popular belief, it is very common to pack an entire strike force onto one bird. The night of August 5th was no different, and this is a common occurrence.
What do you think your chances of taking fire or being shot down are? Going in with one bird and maintaining the element of surprise is always better if you ask me — even if you are packed in there like sardines. This was absolutely not an unusual mission for this unit to be on. Everyone in the national-level SOF task force supports each other and works together. I am sure there are more conspiracy theories out there, but these are the main issues that I felt needed to be addressed.
I know it may be hard to swallow, but bad things happen to good people in war. The men who boarded Extortion 17 that night knew the risks all too well, and had gone out into the night hundreds if not thousands of times before the night of August 5th. They should be remembered for all the good they had done in the War on Terror on behalf of the rest of America, and the world.Brigadier General Jeffrey M.
Colt Lead Investigator. Why was this one-star general selected as the Lead Crash Investigator? Why was a one-star general put in charge of major crash investigation when he was untrained in Crime Scene Investigation, crash analysis, or ballistics? Who told Colt to rush the investigation and complete it within 30 days after the crash?
What person in CENTCOM Central Command or the White House made the decision to put someone apparently unqualified in charge of an investigation of this magnitude and told him to rush to a conclusion in 30 days?
Was this investigation no more than a show trial meant to please the public and to cover-up what really happened? Does this disaster expose a much larger problem in that the military cannot be trusted to investigate itself?
What is the "back story" that has to be hidden and covered up? An improperly filled out flight manifest is a serious crime in the military and carries with it severe penalties.
The military views this as dereliction of duty that can result in death — especially in the battlefield. The Department of Defense very clearly requires not only the names of every member boarding a US military aircraft, but much more information, including twelve specific subcategories. Note that the anti-hijacking statement requires a certification that "no unauthorized weapons or explosives have been brought on the aircraft. So how can one authorize and clear weapons if you don't even know who the person is your clearing?
Failure to properly fill out the flight manifest is a very serious crime that was committed and put SEAL Team Six personnel in grave danger. How and where was Extortion 17 shot down? There are three wildly differing Scenarios graphically illustrated in the Colt report of where the RPG shot originated and where the helicopter was located at the time it was hit.
Note: The Colt report has all scenarios occurring in complete darkness 0 Illuminationenemy having no night vision equipment. General Colt himself states, "the helicopters flew "blacked out" without any visible lighting or external beacons to mark their locations. The Colt report claims, as the helicopter catastrophically broke up, exploded, and fell to the ground, it traveled another yards in 5 seconds at 40 knots.Navy SEAL Foundation - Tragedy Assistance - Extortion 17
This account defies basic mathematics, physics, and the laws of gravity. At best, an object traveling 40 knots in five seconds equals yards not yards. Type your paragraph here. Fallen Angel Investigators have obtained three autopsy reports excluded from the Colt report investigation.
Two of the three autopsies state, "Cook of Rounds [bullets] were recovered at Autopsy. Was there two or one hundred bullets found? The autopsies also fail to mention what the size or caliber of the bullets nor how the bullets were determined to be "cook of rounds" - a bullet exploding in a fire. Independent analysis and testing has proven that it is scientifically impossible for a bullet to explode in a fire and break human flesh - especially flesh protected by a bulletproof vest and military clothing worn by all US Navy Seals.
This is four days after Aug 6 the shoot-down of the Army Reserve helicopter Extortion 17 - and three weeks before the Colt report was finalized. The "cook off rounds" discovered in autopsy were never mentioned nor were they included in the final report.
The questions that must be asked is how did bullets get into the bodies of two SEALs wearing bulletproof Kevlar vests? How many bullets were there?Telegram trade
What were the calibers? Where and from whom did the bullets originate? EXTORTION 17 COVER-UP OF SEAL TEAM SIX SHOOT-DOWN
The team readied themselves. There, they would join a strike force, mostly comprised of soldiers from the 75th Ranger Regiment, to capture or kill Taliban leader, Qari Tahir. Within the belly of the Chinook, the elite fighting force was poised to burst out into the dark night and accomplish its mission.
However, Extortion 17 and the passengers aboard would never reach their destination. Thirty Americans and one American military working dog lost their lives by a Rocket Propelled Grenade and were shot out of the sky.
This was the greatest single-incident loss of life in the history of the U. Special Operations. The film is supplemented by the official military record of the mission, which has glaring discrepancies, to show that something went terribly wrong.
The mounting evidence shows the SEAL Team may have been sacrificed, through negligence in the mission-planning, or something worse. Key facts essential to the case, including the identities of seven Afghans who boarded the helicopter under unusual circumstances, and the true status of the helicopter's missing black box, which has been the subject of conflicting reports by the military, have been consistently ignored by the Navy.
This film presents a rare opportunity, along the lines of Lone Survivor and Zero Dark Thirty, where we have complete access to tell a story of heroism and sacrifice of an elite SEAL Team and one of its operators. Most importantly, the film shares the story of a family that not just survives the loss of their loved one and the controversy that came with it, but how they thrive in the face of adversity while showing us how to live by grace.

Sean Hannity, Fox News.At a. Army Chinook helicopter, call sign Extortion 17, entered the western opening of Afghanistan's restive Tangi Valley, flying alone. Flying feet above the valley floor at just under 70 miles per hour, Dave Carter, the pilot to the right of Nichols, guided the helicopter toward a carefully chosen landing zone just over a mile away.
In the rear of the aircraft, the Chinook's passengers stood and prepared to storm out into moonless night once the wheels touched the ground. Extortion 17, however, would never reach that landing zone. Composed primarily of members of the 75th Ranger Regiment, which falls under the authority of the secretive Joint Special Operations Command, or JSOC, the team sought to capture or kill a powerful insurgent leader, Qari Tahir, known to coalition forces by his designation "Lefty Grove.
When they arrived at the compound, however, the strike force couldn't locate Tahir, and some of his fighters dispersed. JSOC and aviation commanders, prepared for virtually any outcome, quickly formulated a plan: they would send a team on one helicopter to bolster the Ranger-led force.
They loaded onto Extortion 17, and then Carter and Nichols lifted the Chinook into the night sky. Just after entering the Tangi, as Extortion 17 continued to descend and decelerate toward its landing zone, the helicopter passed through the narrowest portion of the valley.
What the men on the Chinook didn't know was that cloaked by darkness, two fighters had emerged from the small village of Hasan Khel, on the south side of the valley. Each shouldered a rocket propelled grenade launcher, aimed at the dim silhouette of the approaching helicopter then fired. A volley of three rockets total sped toward the general direction of the approaching Chinook, all launched within a few seconds of each other.

By the time the third sped away from its launcher, however, no target remained. The second RPG round had connected with one of Extortion 17's aft rotor blades, severing more than 10 feet of it when it exploded. Everyone on board died within a fraction of a second—30 Americans, eight Afghans and one American military working dog.
Extortion 17 then plummeted to the ground and erupted in a massive fireball. Special Operations Command. Due to the sheer magnitude of loss of life, combined with recent news of SEAL Team Six's successful raid on Osama bin Laden's compound, global media outlets lionized the tragedy. They then repeated and emphasized a few related questions: How could this happen?
What went so terribly wrong? Misinformation regarding the skills of the pilots and crew, and nonsensical conspiracy theories—often politically motivated—followed, much of which unfortunately continues to this day.
This misinformation persists in part because those unfamiliar with the battlefield aren't taking into account a fundamental part of war: chance. Extortion 17's pilots and crew ranked among the very best military helicopter pilots in the world Carter had amassed more than 4, hours of cockpit timeand the helicopter, a CHD, the fastest and one of the most powerful and nimble in the U. The pilots, crew and Chinook helicopters of "Extortion Company," the conventional Army aviation unit to which Extortion 17 belonged, had supported over 90 percent of raids conducted by Rangers and SEALs of JSOC in that region; the flight in question was nothing out of the ordinary.
Extortion 17 and the Truth
JSOC ground forces and those who flew them knew and trusted each other. The route had been carefully planned, and gunships maintained continuous watch over the intended landing zone during Extortion 17's approach. Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft that supported the raid, including a Predator drone, and a variety of highly specialized spy planes, had kept continuous watch over the region during the operation.
Nobody involved had overlooked even the most minute detail. In the immediate wake of the tragedy, the military initiated two investigations. The Joint Combat Assessment Team report identified, through detailed metallurgical analysis, the type of projectile that blew Extortion 17 out of the sky: an antipersonnel unguided ballistic rocket propelled grenade. The second probe, led by Army Brigadier General Jeffrey Colt, explained in excruciating detail what all those familiar with military operations and helicopter aviation in Afghanistan already knew: chance and chance alone, took down Extortion It was an auspicious day for the two enemy fighters.

Army Rangers left at forward operating base in Logar Province via two CHD transport helicopters, one of which would later be involved in the accident. The mission was deemed high risk; two AH Apache helicopters, an AC gunshipand other additional intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft ISR supported the troop transports on their approach, and remained with the ground forces afterwards.
Navy SEALs remained in reserve at the forward operating base. As the Rangers approached the target compound, ISR aircraft observed several people leaving the compound. This group grew in number over the course of the night, but US forces were—at first—too preoccupied to engage.Mansfield 40 toilet handle
Separately, ISR aircraft continued to observe the un-engaged group from the compound. Originally just two people, the group eventually accumulated a total of fighters, and the special-operations task-force commander and the Immediate Reaction Force commander became concerned that it might include Qari Tahrir. The landing zone had been examined for a previous mission, but had not yet been used. Atthe special operations task force commander and the Immediate Reaction Force commander decided to add additional non-SEAL reinforcements, increasing the size of the team to In order to speed disembarkation, all troops were loaded on a single CHD helicopter for transport; the other Chinook would approach the landing zone second as a decoy.

The Colt report also states that the Chinook CH catastrophically exploded in mid air killing all on board instantly. The entire investigation was completed and closed within 30 days. Currently, all autopsy reports are being held and sealed by the US military.
