This page is for personal, non-commercial use. Almost every single electrical system on a car is powered through some kind of switch or electrical relay, and the AC system and compressor are no exception.

The AC compressor relay is responsible for supplying power to the AC compressor and clutch. Without this relay, the AC compressor will not have power and the AC system will not function.

The AC compressor relay is no different then other electrical relays - its electrical contacts will eventually wear or burn out, and the relay must be replaced. When the AC compressor relay has failed or is beginning to fail, it will begin to display symptoms that indicate it may be time for it to be replaced. The AC compressor is powered by the relay. If it is not functioning properly, then the AC system will not be able to produce cold air correctly. When a relay is starting to fail, it may give weakened or intermittent power to the compressor, which will result in weakened or intermittent function of the AC.

The AC may function fine in one instance, and then shut off, or deliver inconsistent performance in another. This may be a potential sign that the relay may be going out. One of the most obvious signs that the AC relay may have a problem is that the compressor is not coming on at all. In most cases, when the AC is turned on you will be able to hear the compressor switch on. It will usually produce a familiar clicking noise from the clutch being activated.

If when you turn it on you do not hear the clutch being turned on, then perhaps it may not be getting power, due to a failed relay. Another symptom that the AC relay has potentially failed is that there will be no cold air at all from the AC. If the relay fails, the compressor will not operate and the AC system will be unable to produce any cold air at all. While there are several reasons as to why an AC may stop producing cold aira failed relay can be one of the most common.

If you are experiencing issues with your AC system and suspect that your AC relay has either failed or is beginning to fail, we recommend having it diagnosed by a professional technician.

If your AC relay is found to be faulty, they will be able to replace the AC relay if necessary.By using our site, you acknowledge that you have read and understand our Cookie PolicyPrivacy Policyand our Terms of Service. DucatiKiller Thanks for the imput. Both 87A and 30 show 12v. I swapped the relay and no change. This car has auto ac you can set the temp so I guess its auto-manual is only off and on?? I have a ambient temperature led display in the head liner and the temperature on that is always correct, so unless there is a separate sensor for the ac, I am certain the temp sensor is ok.

OK the puddle on the floor helped me notice. When it started Saturday morning, I thinkthere was a click, 10 seconds of buzzing, then silence. This would repeat every minutes. I didn't think much of it, thinking it's the ice maker acting weird. What I should have noticed was the complete absence of compressor noise - just the fan. Actually, there wasn't even that noise - it was silent.

I eventually figured out that the start relay if you can even call it that needs replacement, but that was not the initial problem - the problem, as it turned out, was one packing peanut. Yeah, one peanut - it got stuck in the Condenser Fan, literally preventing it from running. This in turn probably caused ice buildup, or in some other way increased the compressor load, which in turn finished off the start relay.

Frankly, I'm not sure how long the peanut was in there - may have been months, or maybe just a day. So if you're seeing similar behaviour see first paragraphthese are the steps to troubleshoot and temporarily remedy the situation Disclaimer : there is a very good chance of electrocuting yourself in the process, as with any high voltage appliance.

I have a little wiring diagram that explains what and why in here as well. It took me a little while to understand how the fridge even operates. The Works So here is a diagram that may help. When current flows through it, it gets hot. What this means is that when power is first applied, it shorts terminals 1 and 2 also the Motor Run Capacitor and power is applied to both windings of the compressor, allowing it to start.

Once it gets hot I assume this happens in secondspower remains applied to only one winding, which is all the compressor needs to stay running at this time Once the PTC "unshorts" the Run Capacitor, the capacitor generates an off-phase kind of thing that I didn't bother to fully understand, I suspect it's about efficiency or not overdriving the motor when it's up to full speed. Anonymous on Help, I'm trying to get a fridge compressor to power an airbrush, i can get the thing running then it cuts out when the 60 psi is reached in the tank pressure cut out switch wired to mains input.

This is the only decent explanation of how the starter system works that i have found trawling the net and if it does turn out to be the ptc any ideas how to get around it? Admin on Fascinating idea. It may be the PTC, and if it is, I'd guess that a high power low ohm resistor on a momentary switch across the PTC would get it jump started every time The problem is that you need both windings to start the compressor, and this is one way of doing it.

Your system is not closed, and you most likely do not inject oil into your paint spray - so if I'm right, how do you lubricate the compressor? THe lost oil is about an egg cup full evry three to 4 months so i can live with that. I have welded up a u shaped frame from scaffolding tube to act as a reciever to stop the pulsing and when pressure testing it with the fridge motor i was amazed to get it to psi and then i chickened out as my cut off valve is set to 50psi so i didn't need the extra pressure.

I had thought of letting the intake air pull over the PTC to keep it's temp down and hopefully reduce the time between starts what do you think?

The other option is that because the unit runs for less than 60 seconds each time to just let both windings run on and replace the motor every 12 months ors so, it was a scrap unit to start with so no financial loss. How to Bypass FRP on alcatel a.A refrigerator relay is an electric switch that cycles the compressor on and off in response to the demand for cool air inside the appliance. Because compressors are not designed to run continuously, the relay is both an energy-saving feature and a safety component that prevents the compressor from wearing out prematurely.

Dangers of bypassing AC compressor Relay

However, if the relay malfunctions, the compressor may not cycle on at all. Bypassing the relay is a quick technique for isolating the problem. Do not leave the appliance in bypass mode or you risk damage to the compressor. Unplug the refrigerator power cord and move the appliance away from the wall so you can get to the back of the cabinet. Remove any cover plate from the bottom of the refrigerator using a screwdriver to take out the screws.

Some refrigerators may not have a rear cover plate so this may not apply to your situation. Flex the top and bottom edges of the metal box in the lower right corner to disengage the tabs and pull off the box.

This is the cover for the relay. Insert the tip of a flat-blade screwdriver into the space between the relay and the inside top of the housing for the relay. Press down on the top of the relay with the screwdriver as you pull back on the part to remove it from the housing. Slide off the wire on the side of the relay by pulling on the metal connector at the end of the wire.

Attach each end of the copper wire to the two contacts inside the housing for the relay.

Secure the wire ends to the contacts with electrical tape. This closes the circuit and bypasses the relay. Turn the temperature control knob inside the refrigerator to the highest position for a test. If the compressor clicks and activates, producing a distinctive humming sound, the relay is defective and should be replaced. Do not run the appliance indefinitely in bypass mode. Step 1 Unplug the refrigerator power cord and move the appliance away from the wall so you can get to the back of the cabinet.

Step 2 Remove any cover plate from the bottom of the refrigerator using a screwdriver to take out the screws. Step 3 Flex the top and bottom edges of the metal box in the lower right corner to disengage the tabs and pull off the box. Step 4 Insert the tip of a flat-blade screwdriver into the space between the relay and the inside top of the housing for the relay.

Step 5 Slide off the wire on the side of the relay by pulling on the metal connector at the end of the wire. Step 7 Attach each end of the copper wire to the two contacts inside the housing for the relay.

After reading, go to this post to learn how to diagnose a compressor clutch problem. Car makers use an electro-magnetic clutch to engage and disengage the air conditioning compressor. When power energizes the clutch coil, the magnetic field pulls the clutch in towards the pulley.

How to Bypass A/C compressor for Car/Truck

As the clutch disc pulls in towards the pulley, the pulley provides the rotating power to operate the compressor. So start your diagnosis by determining if the compressor clutch works. Then look at the front of the compressor clutch. Both the pulley and the clutch should be spinning. That means the clutch has properly engaged with the pulley. AC compressor clutches receive power in a number of ways.

Or, the relay can be operated by the PCM which has interpreted the condition of the low and high pressure sensors. In that case, the PCM would see that the refrigerant pressures are within bounds and the PCM would provide a ground connection to the control coil side of the AC compressor clutch relay.

In some vehicles the compressor clutch relay is turned on and off by the low pressure switch and the evaporator temperature sensor. In a computer controlled system, the compressor clutch relay is grounded by the computer. If the fuse is good, disconnect the electrical connector from the compressor clutch coil. Move it away from moving parts so you can safely check for power and ground.

With engine running and the AC set to MAX, use a digital voltmeter to check for battery voltage and good ground at the connector. Wiring varies by make, model, and year. In order for the computer to provide ground, it must receive a good signal from the low pressure switch, high pressure switch, and evaporator temperature sensor.

In other vehicles the power flows through the air conditioning switch to the fuse and from the fuse through the low pressure and evaporator temperature sensor to the clutch coil. The compressor clutch air gap is critical to the AC compressor clutch engaging. To learn more about AC compressor clutch air gap, read this post.

DIY recharging kits tell you to recharge through the low pressure port while the compressor is engaged. But if the system is low on refrigerant, the clutch will never engage. Some DIYers then hotwire the low pressure switch to force the compressor clutch to engage while they recharge. You may get it to accept a charge, but you may have already damaged the compressor before the system reaches full charge. NEVER try to bypass the low pressure switch. Doing so will force the compressor to run with inadequate oil and can destroy the compressor.

Moisture reacts with the refrigerant and oil to cause acid and sludge that can destroy the system. Then the system should be fully evacuated to remove all air before recharging. Not really. You could have a low side target range of psi and see that static pressure on your gauge. All that tells you is that there is some refrigerant in the system. But 1 ounce of refrigerant will provide a psi reading the same as a full system.

How Do I Check an AC Clutch Relay?

The only thing a kit gauge can tell you is that your system is completely empty if you attach the gauge and get a reading of 0-psi. A static pressure taken on the high side is a slightly better indicator of system charge because the high side is much more responsive to ambient temperature than the low side.

There is a way to add more refrigerant without hot wiring the low pressure switch and running the compressor. An automobile can have numerous serious problems and a dysfunctional AC compressor clutch is one of them. When this component does not work properly, the engine does not get the cold air flow — leading to some major complications. Knowing how to manually engage AC compressor clutch will help you skip a visit to the mechanic.

Plus, you should also know how to examine the clutch to find out if it is faulty or not. Using low-quality oil could be a reason for failing AC compressor clutch but it could happen even if you use synthetic oil and high-quality coolant.

In a few cases, the clutch does not engage due to a clogged refrigerant circuit.

If you want to diagnose an AC compressor clutch for defects, apply these techniques:. Set all air conditioning controls to the MAX before kicking off the engine.

Check the front side of the clutch to examine its condition. Also, find out whether the clutch and the pulley are spinning. If only the pulley is rotating, the compressor clutch is having an issue, which could be stemming from several sources — a blown fuse, bad clutch oil, low-pressure lockout, or an open wire in the oil. A careful inspection of the system and its components will help you to pinpoint the source of trouble.

In this step, you have to detach the connector cable from clutch oil.

Keep it safely away from all other components. Use a digital voltmeter to measure the ground and voltage of the battery at the detached connector cable. Go on to check the fuse if you cannot read the voltage readings. Move on to the clutch relay if the fuse turns out fine. In a few car models, the power of the air conditioning system flows from the AC switch to the fuse before being transmitted to the clutch oil through the low-pressure evaporator temperature.

You have to make sure that the compressor has enough oil to function properly. When you are sure that there is a problem with the clutch, the next part is to engage it. The next section tells you how to manually engage AC compressor clutch at home. Engaging the AC compressor clutch at home is not rocket science. There are a couple of ways you can fix the problem to bring back the air conditioning system in order. What is the most common reason for an air conditioning compressor not to engage?

Low level of refrigerant. When the coolant level in the system goes down, the low-pressure switch does not allow the compressor to rotate. How to manually engage AC compressor clutch when the system is low on antifreeze?

Just adding refrigerant will solve this problem.

If your car is compatible with Ra type of refrigerant, attaching a can to the system will override the low-pressure switch and restore the normal function of the compressor clutch.
